1.2 Prerequisites

Below are the prerequisites for working with CloudTran.

  • OS    Windows XP SP2, Mac OS X or Linux (we test under Ubuntu 10 but support other Linux variants).
  • Java    Java SE 6 JDK, version 1.6.0 minimum. We recommend Sun JDK1.6.0_21 and higher.
  • Eclipse    The preferred version of Eclipse is Helios SR1 or SR2 (Version 3.6.1/2). The latest version is available at http://www.eclipse.org/downloads. If you have another version of Eclipse installed:
    • Version 3.6.0 is not recommended - install one of the service packs.
    • The plugin is supported on Galileo (Eclipse 3.5).
    • Ganymede (Eclipse 3.4) is no longer supported.

You must use the Eclipse Modelling Tools configuration, which looks like this:

    This is a 370MB download.
  • GigaSpaces    This version of CloudTran is for GigaSpaces XAP, Premium version (not Community) for Java 5+, available from the GigaSpaces download page. This is free to download for evaluation.

We recommend the latest version (GigaSpaces 8). This version is incompatible with version 7.x. To download an evaluation version, you will need to go to the LatestProductVersion page.

Download the "Premium version for Java 5+".

You will need GigaSpaces XAP installed to compile and run CloudTran programs. The examples in the manual are based on Windows, with the GigaSpaces home directory being C:\gigaspaces-xap-premium-8.0.2-ga.

This plugin is primarily aimed at developers (architects, programmers) rather than business modelers. You do not need to be familiar with GigaSpaces to use CloudTran.

  • MySQL    While MySQL is not required to develop with CloudTran, some of the examples use MySQL, and it is the default datasource.

The supported MySQL version is 5.1, which is also the current supported version for Amazon's RDS (Relational Database Service). The examples assume MySQL is placed in the directory C:\MySQL.
